And after my first visit, I was hooked. The book selection is superb, and the additional merchandise—like the Read, Write, Resistt-shirts, for example—speaks to the independent, activist flavor of the entire establishment. 

Pondering Protagonists

Now that I am working on a YA novel, I desperately want to emulate the writers and books I love. I want to create a protagonist who is multifaceted and admirable.

But it’s really, really hard.

Ode to my Colleagues

Days ago, my coworkers threw me a going away party. Every detail was elaborate and thoughtful and, above all, showed that my colleagues truly knew and appreciated me. When you’re around people who think that highly of you, the hard days are easier to bear. Confiscating cell phones and vapes or grading several stacks of essays feels easier because there are people you can commiserate with, people you love.

From Planning to Perspiring...

And, in a few short weeks, I’ll be throwing predictability to the wind. I’m selling most of my earthly possessions. I’ve turned in my resignation letter. There are going away parties and tearful goodbyes on the horizon.
